Nibelungenhalle Königswinter
The Nibelungenhalle Königswinter was built in 1913 to commemorate Richard Wagner’s opera cycle and continues to fascinate visitors to this day. The combination of mystical dragon myth, spectacular Art Nouveau architecture and a magnificent view over the Rhine Valley makes this attraction the perfect day trip destination for families and culture fans. You can reach the hall in less than 25 minutes from your Oberwinter vacation apartment – perfect for a spontaneous excursion.
Legends & history – why a dragon lurks here
Even the Romans are said to have been impressed by the steep basalt cliffs on Drachenfels. But it was the medieval myth of the Nibelungs that gave the mountain a literary monument: this is where Siegfried the dragon slayer defeated the beast and bathed in its blood. The Bonn factory owner Paul Spitta took up the legend in 1913 and commissioned the construction of the Nibelungenhalle. Architect Hans Meier created a 12-cornered domed building in the late Art Nouveau style. 12 frescoes by Hermann Hendrich show scenes from the “Ring of the Nibelung” and convey a fascinating cross-section of German legends. The building remained virtually intact during the world wars and has been a listed building since 1958. Further background information can be found in the official list of monuments ¹.
Art Nouveau you can touch
Those who pass through the green wooden door enter a total work of art: flowing lines, playful plant ornaments and a color spectrum of ochre, deep green and gold. The 12-metre-high domed room, whose central oculus window casts a cone of light onto the dragon altar, is particularly Instagrammable. Photo tip: Come at lunchtime when the sun is setting vertically. The hall was extensively restored in 2023; modern LED spotlights now highlight details such as the gilded capitals. QR codes explain the symbolism – ideal for an interactive family tour.
Dragon cave, reptile zoo & panoramic terrace
Next to the main hall, a tunnel leads into the artificial dragon cave. A nine-meter-long concrete dragon with demonic glowing eyes makes children’s hearts beat faster. Right next door, the reptile zoo is home to around 40 species – from the green anaconda to the colorful panther chameleon. Safe behind glass, children learn exciting facts about species conservation. Outside, the panoramic terrace overlooking the Rhine is well worth a detour. On a clear day, you can see as far as Godesburg Castle.
