Wandern mit Kinderwagen am Rhein

Hiking with a baby carriage on the Rhine – 4 circular routes without tripping hazards

Who says family-friendly walks have to be boring? Wandern Kinderwagen Rhein opens the door to four completely asphalted circular routes along the Middle Rhine, which baby carriages, baby carriages and even beginner skaters can master with ease. Below we present the routes, service tips and photo spots – and reveal how you can end the day relaxing in our Oberwinter vacation apartment afterwards.

Route 1: Rhine bank trail Remagen-Kripp (3 km)

Start directly at the Kripp-Linzer Werth Rhine ferry. The wide Rhine cycle path is freshly asphalted, completely flat and offers a permanently unobstructed view of Linz opposite. Benches and picnic tables invite you to take a break every 500 meters. A highlight for the little ones is the “Rheinkiesel” playground at kilometer 1.5. In summer, you can cool your feet on the barrier-free steps along the banks while cargo ships pass by in the backlight. You can park free of charge at the ferry terminal; if you are traveling by public transport, you can reach the route via the “Remagen” train station and a 10-minute walk. Got hungry? The “Gelateria Valentino” ice cream store on the Rhine promenade is just three minutes away from the route.

Route 2: Oberwinter → Bandorfer Hafen loop (4 km)

Right on the doorstep of our vacation apartments, a traffic-free asphalt road leads along the old jetty to the hidden Bandorf harbor. The route combines Rhine idyll with industrial romance: historic cranes, houseboats and grazing sheep create exciting photo opportunities. The turning facilities at the harbor are generous, so that even twin buggies can easily turn around. Tip for early risers: around 7 a.m., the morning sun turns the surface of the water a golden orange – perfect for Instagram shots (#SunriseRhine). The Rheingenuss café offers refreshments with a changing table and a breastfeeding-friendly atmosphere.

Route 3: Bad Godesberg riverside trail (5 km)

From the landing point of the Bundesstadt ferry, an almost circular, asphalted riverside path runs to the Godesburg bridge and back across the parallel park. A width of 3 meters, zero elevation gain and regular railings make the course particularly safe. Free baby changing facilities are available at the park café for sanitary stops. From May to September, a mobile crêpes trolley provides sugar supplies. Cultural extra: every first Sunday, students from the Cologne University of Music perform classical pieces as short open-air concerts. This turns the walk into a mini-festival for the whole family.

Route 4: Grafenwerth Island circuit (2.8 km)

The smallest, but perhaps most spectacular path is near Bad Honnef. Cross the barrier-free bridge to reach the car-free Rhine island of Grafenwerth. A closed asphalt circuit leads once around the island, past old pollarded willows, sandy beaches and the historic open-air swimming pool (now an event location). The small petting zoo with dwarf goats is particularly popular – a sure hit with children under five. Picnic areas with table tennis tables encourage longer breaks. If you still have energy left, you can hire a rowing boat from the island hire shop (children’s life jackets available). From Oberwinter, you can easily reach Grafenwerth by taking the regional train RB26 to Honnef, then a 15-minute walk suitable for baby carriages.

Conclusion:

Four varied Rhine routes show that hiking the Rhine with a baby carriage is not only possible, but a real pleasure. Whether you choose the short island circuit or the scenic riverside path – all routes start less than 15 minutes by car from our accommodation.
