Roman Villa Ahrweiler
The Roman Villa Ahrweiler is one of the most impressive time capsules of Rhenish antiquity. Just a 20-minute drive from the Oberwinter vacation apartment, you enter a 1,700-year-old manor house whose underfloor heating, wall paintings and wine presses now look almost as if the Roman lords of the manor had just turned the key thanks to modern conservation technology. Anyone looking for a rainy day or a culture-hungry evening program will find a weather-independent attraction in this museum.
Archaeological treasure on the Silberberg – discovery & preservation
It was not until 1980 that a landslide on Ahrweiler Silberberg exposed the mighty walls. Instead of sacrificing the site for the planned road construction, the town and state decided to carry out an extensive excavation. Over 16,000 finds – from terra sigillata shards to filigree hairpins – were documented in the following years. Particularly spectacular: the almost completely preserved praefurnium tunnel, through which hot air fed the hypocaust heater. Today, a modern steel and glass construction protects the monument from temperature fluctuations, while visitors literally float above the mosaics thanks to raised walkways. The permanent exhibition not only explains the rural life of rich Romanized people, but also places the villa in the context of the agricultural economy of the province of Germania Superior. Interactive stations show, for example, how much grain a latifundia produced each year – ideal for making history lessons tangible in the middle of a vacation.
Virtual reality tour: 360° journey through time in 3D
Since 2024, a virtual reality experience has complemented the classic museum visit. With Oculus glasses on your nose, you are suddenly standing in the blooming peristyle garden, hearing cicadas buzzing and watching a slave carrying amphorae into the kitchen. The digital reconstruction is based on laser scans of the original foundation and the archaeological expertise of the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn. Visitors can choose between three scenarios: Everyday life of an estate family, harvest time in the Ahr valley and a festival in honor of the god Mercury. Children particularly love the “Find the mosaic fox” mode, in which hidden details earn points. The VR station is included in the admission price; however, we recommend reserving a slot at weekends as there are only eight headsets available. If you want to get in the mood for VR, you can find a 360° trailer on the official website.
Opening hours, tickets & arrival from Oberwinter
According to the town of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, the 2025 season starts on March 18 and runs until the end of November (Tue-Sun 10am-5pm, closed on Mondays). Admission: €7 for adults, €4 reduced; family ticket €16. Tickets are available on site or contactless via QR code at the ticket office – handy if you are coming directly from the Ahr Valley cycle path and have your wallet at home. From the Oberwinter vacation apartment, you can reach the villa in 20 minutes via the B9 or in 40 minutes by train to “Ahrweiler Markt” plus 900 meters on foot. Free parking is available directly below the museum; e-bikers will find a new charging station there. Public transport tip: If you use the “VRS-TagesTicket”, you can take another person with you free of charge after 7 pm – ideal for a combined museum and dinner excursion.
Special exhibition 2025 – Luxury through the ages
Parallel to the permanent exhibition, the Roman Villa is showing “Luxury through the ages” until November 9, 2025. Selected grave goods from a neighboring find in Bachem provide an insight into fashion, jewelry and beauty rituals in late antiquity. An interactive make-up mirror projects Roman faces onto today’s visitors – perfect for a short TikTok video (hashtag #RomanGlow). Curator Silke Jaensch gives a guided tour of the exhibits on the first Saturday of every month and explains why purple was more expensive than gold back then. The guided tour costs €3 extra, book via museum@roemervilla.de.
Enjoyment & views of the Rhine around the villa
After the cultural program, regional delights beckon: A five-minute walk takes you to Weingut Sonnenberg, where a cellar tasting of Ahr Pinot Noir rounds off the day. Alternatively, the “Ahrweiler Freiheitsgarten” vinotheque at the Ahr Gate offers 24 wines by the glass. The playground at Sahrbach is recommended for families, before returning to Oberwinter via the romantic Ahr Valley Railway.
Conclusion
Whether you are an archaeology nerd, a history novice or simply looking for a weatherproof excursion destination – the Roman Villa Ahrweiler delivers “wow!” moments for all age groups. The new virtual reality tour makes history tangible, and thanks to good public transport connections, the trip can be easily combined with a Rhine vacation in Oberwinter.
