Picnic, Ahr valley, vineyards – doesn’t that sound like pure enjoyment? Bring the romance of the Ahr valley to your picnic blanket – and check your preferred date in our booking calendar now!
Why a winegrowers’ picnic in the Ahr Valley?
The Ahr Valley is Germany’s northernmost red wine-growing region and is also considered one of the most dramatic river valleys in Europe: narrow slate slopes, medieval castles such as the Are ruins and quaint half-timbered villages form a spectacular backdrop. Wine hikers have been celebrating top vineyards such as “Domlay” or “Rosenthal” here for years, but a picnic takes the experience to a whole new level. Instead of traditional snack boxes, Ahr winegrowers now deliver sumptuous baskets of Pinot Noir, home-baked drift bread, game ham from the Eifel and goat’s cheese from an organic farm. In doing so, you are directly supporting the family-run businesses that rebuilt the valley after the 2021 flood.
How to book your picnic basket – three recommended providers

Tips for perfect photos, weather & sustainability
* Check golden hour:** The sun usually sets 40 minutes earlier in the narrow valley than in Bonn. Our rule of thumb: sunset time minus 60 minutes = best light.
* **Tripod-free long exposure:** Place your smartphone on a flat vine post and activate the 3-second timer – shake-free shots without extra luggage.
**Waste-free picnics:** Use the cloth napkins provided, separate glass and organic waste and pack everything up again. The vineyards are the habitat of rare wall lizards!
**Weather back-up:** If rain threatens, you can rebook your basket from many providers free of charge within 24 hours – just ask when you make your reservation.
Arrival, parking & after-picnic stops
From Oberwinter, you can reach Dernau or Bad Neuenahr via the B 266 in just under 20 minutes; the A61 exit ‘Bad Neuenahr’ is only 12 km away. Free parking for hikers is available at the ‘Kloster Marienthal’ (P&R), ‘Bahnhof Mayschoß’ and at the ‘Winzergenossenschaft Dagernova’. After your picnic, it’s worth making a detour to the ‘Ahr-Therme’ or an espresso in the historic ‘Café Schopp’ in Dernau.

If you’re looking for some exercise before feasting, start at the **Rech** train station on the short 3.8 km “Red Wine Loop” (marked with a blue bunch of grapes). The trail leads past dry stone walls full of wild herbs, through shady oak woods and ends at the quaint **Winzerkapelle St. Sebastian** – a photo motif that no feed should be without. From there, it is less than five minutes to picnic area no. 2. Duration: around 75 minutes, altitude difference: moderate 120 m, so also suitable for leisure hikers.
