Packliste Rhein Urlaub

Packing list Rhine vacation

The anticipation of a Rhine vacation grows with every glance at photos of castles, vineyards and cozy wine taverns. But it often turns into a hectic rush when it comes to packing: What do you really need for a vacation apartment, how changeable is the weather on the banks, and where is the charger actually hidden? We have put together a “Rhine packing list” to help you travel without stress. It is based on the experiences of hundreds of guests in our apartments and covers all scenarios, from spontaneous wine tasting to a stage on the Rheinsteig.

By the way, we provide our guests with towels, bed linen, Nespresso capsules, soap and shampoo from Rituals free of charge.

1. understand Rhine weather: Clever layering of clothing

With almost 1,700 hours of sunshine per year, the region between Bonn and Boppard is one of the warmest spots in Germany, but often experiences unexpected humidity due to the course of the river. In July, the thermometer often climbs above 28 °C during the day, but around 9 pm it can suddenly cool down by ten degrees when the cool breeze blows from the stream valleys. The solution is called the “onion skin principle”. Start with a breathable merino shirt that still smells fresh after the bike tour, add a lighter fleece and pack a soft or hard shell jacket with taped seams. If you are on an excursion boat, you should also stow a hat and thin gloves in your bag – the wind over 15 km/h quickly feels like autumn.
The following applies to shoes: two pairs are enough. A mid-height hiking or approach shoe for the Rheinsteig, Red Wine Trail & Co. and an airy sneaker or espadrille for the city. Flip-flops are still allowed, but only for the sauna at the Ahr resort!
Probability of rain: According to the German Weather Service the rainfall in August is a moderate 55 mm, spread over six to seven days. An ultra-light rain poncho therefore often replaces an umbrella and saves space. Our insider tip: A thin down vest can be packed into any daypack and saves spontaneous viewpoints such as the Rolandsbogen plateau at sunrise.

2. basic equipment for the vacation apartment – what is really missing

Many online packing lists ignore the fact that modern vacation apartments already offer more than some hotel suites. In addition to a fully equipped kitchen, our apartments also have a dishwasher, induction hob, Nespresso machine and smart TV. So save half the household items and concentrate on the comfort extras:
– Own spice grinder: Regional meat from the Remagen weekly market unfolds even more flavor with freshly ground pepper.
– Technical all-rounder: A 4-way USB charging adapter prevents the plug dispute between smartphone, power bank, e-book and action cam.
– Magnetic bottle cap: It keeps wasps away from Riesling at picnics on the Rhine.
– Travel Bluetooth speaker <80 dB: For quiet background music – please observe the house rules.

Also practical: a foldable rucksack (20 L) for city trips to Bonn or Koblenz, a small first-aid kit (plasters, antihistamine), and a socket protection set for parents. Are you traveling by train? Then order a drinks crate from the E-Rewe delivery service for the day of arrival – contactless delivery possible.

3. active on the Rhine: special equipment for outdoor fans

Hardly any other vacation region combines so many activities in such a small space: steep vineyard trails, flat Rhine cycle paths and even via ferratas such as the Cochem Calmont can be reached within an hour’s drive. To keep you flexible, we recommend the following extras:
– Trekking poles made of carbon (<400 g/pair) – take the strain off your knees on the 400 steps of the Drachenfels.
– Bicycle helmet lamp with USB-C – the way back from the RheinAue beer garden often ends at dusk.
– Drybag (10 L) for SUP or kayak excursions; in accordance with the 2024 specifications of the NRW Water Sports Association it should be buoyant.
– Microfiber towel XL – dries up to 8 times faster than terry cloth and saves space in the daypack.
Road bike fans: Don’t forget the 15 mm Allen key – on the Remagen-Unkel section, bikers recently reported loose thru axles after cobblestones.

For culture lovers, it’s worth taking a small pair of binoculars: you’ll be able to see the fine details of the Rhine castles from the ship. Good to know: Since 2025, the *Museumsmeile* excursion ticket no longer includes the Bonn Art Museum, but the new *House of Happiness* – you can find updates on our blog.

4. documents, apps & digital security

Even if the Rhine seems romantically old – your vacation is digital. In addition to the classic ID card, driving license and EC card, the EU health certificate has been available as a PDF on your cell phone since July 2024. This means you can get your medication in any pharmacy in seconds in an emergency. Plan trips with DB Navigator, as the Germany ticket requires online check-ins for long connections. For car drivers, the “Parken Bonn” app is worth its weight in gold: it shows free parking spaces on the Museum Mile in real time.
Local insider tip: the free “Rheinpegel Bonn” app – if you paddle at a water level of <1.60 m, you risk coming into contact with rocks. Protect your devices with a multiple socket with overvoltage protection; storm fronts can cause lightning strikes on the river. The vacation apartment offers 100 Mbit WLAN; you will find the password on the welcome board.
