Book your time-out now and start the day with a dose of endorphins!
Why running on the Rhine is so special
The lush green of the riverside forests, the gentle lapping of the waves and the almost Mediterranean light atmosphere make the Rhine promenade around Oberwinter a running area with postcard flair. Thanks to the wide, asphalted paths, you don’t have to worry about bumps – perfect for fast intervals as well as a relaxed after-work jog. For guests staying at the Oberwinter vacation apartment, the start is just 400 meters away. You can reach the shore in two minutes via the dam path. As you warm up, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Siebengebirge mountains, which shimmer pink in the morning light. According to the weather service, there is an average of 7 hours of sunshine a day here from March to October – the best conditions for plenty of vitamin D and a good mood. 👉 Insider tip: set off early to make the most of the golden hour.
The 5-kilometer wake-up lap
Start in front of the old crane at Oberwinter harbor. From here, you run up the Rhine to the Rolandseck ferry. The path is flat, well-lit and asphalted throughout – perfect for stroller runners or beginners. At the turning point, there is a public drinking water fountain that the city of Remagen installed in summer 2024. You return along the same route, with a view of the morning boat trip. You will cover a total of 5,841 steps (average stride length 0.85 m) and burn around 350 kcal* (*based on 70 kg body weight, pace 6:30 min/km).
10-kilometer panoramic loop to Kripp
Ambitious cyclists choose the longer circular route: from the harbor, follow the Rhine to the mouth of the Ahr and on to Kripp. At the Pegelhäuschen, you branch off onto the Rheinhöhenweg. Here, the route gains a moderate 80 meters in altitude and gives you a fantastic view of the Rolandsbogen. On clear days, the view stretches as far as Drachenfels. 0.75 km after Kripp, a small path leads over the new “Golden Mile” cycle and pedestrian bridge back to the left bank of the Rhine. From there, early risers can jog straight to the bakery for a croissant breakfast.
Training tips & safety
1 **Pace management:** Use the first 500 meters as a warm-up. Studies by the German Sport University Cologne show that a progressive start reduces the risk of injury by 30% (source 1). 2 **Hydration stations:** You will find public water taps at the harbor, at the ferry dock and at the Rheinterrasse Kripp. 3 **Light & visibility:** In the fall, the sun sets around 7 pm. A headlamp with 150 lumens is enough for the completely asphalted path. Reflective clothing increases your visibility fourfold according to ADAC measurement 2025 (source 2). 4 **Blister-free feet:** The promenade has a fine gravel surface in a few places, so choose shoes with a robust outsole. 5 **Cool-down spot:** The rose gardens behind the parish church offer quiet benches for stretching and breathing exercises.
