Why the Sieg is perfect for paddling

The almost 155-kilometre-long Sieg has its source in the Rothaargebirge mountains and flows into the Rhine near Bonn. For the last 30 kilometers, it flows through a wide floodplain valley – ideal for relaxed day trips without challenging whitewater passages. Nature lovers enjoy the species-rich banks: kingfishers, little ringed plovers and beavers are regularly spotted here. Since 2024, the section between Eitorf and Menden has been one of the ten “Blue Classics” of the German Canoe Association. An important plus for beginners: The average flow speed is only around 4 km/h, so kids aged six and over can also paddle along safely. If you prefer not to tow your boat, you can use the well-developed rental network. Many rental companies transport the boats by shuttle, so you can conveniently leave your car at the destination parking lot. By the way: At Sankt Augustin, the river meets the Nachtigallental – a hotspot for rare orchids that makes for a short shore excursion.

Best entry points & arrival from Oberwinter

From Oberwinter, you can reach the most popular starting points in less than 25 minutes by car. The start in Menden (Sieg) is ideal for a half-day tour: Parking spaces at the outdoor pool and a gentle slip ramp make it easy to put in. If you want to paddle for a whole day, start in Hennef-Allner. Travel tip without a car: Take the MittelrheinBahn RB 26 to ‘Siegauen’ station and walk five minutes to the shore. Rental equipment is available from providers such as ‘Kanusport Bonn’ directly on the water. Plan roughly two hours of pure paddling time for the 10 km stage Menden→Bonn-Graurheindorf.

Water level check & safety: how to stay dry

The Sieg is considered a reliable recreational river, but you should always check the water level and weather. Official measuring points can be found at the Waterways and Shipping Authority (WSA Rhein). A water level of between 0.7 m and 1.2 m in Eitorf is ideal for leisure trips. If the level is below this, you must expect groundings; if it rises above 1.5 m, a temporary navigation ban often applies. Also check the wind forecast: a strong westerly wind can create a troublesome counter-current on straight sections. Safety equipment – life jacket, pack sack, cell phone cover – is mandatory.
