Rolandseck Wildlife Park excursion
Are you planning a trip to Rolandseck Wildlife Park with children, grandparents or friends and looking for a nice base for a whole weekend on the Rhine? Then you’ve come to the right place. The Rolandseck Forest and Wildlife Park near Remagen is one of the most popular family hotspots in the region: native wild animals, lots of forest, a playground and barbecue areas – and all just a few minutes’ drive from our Oberwinter vacation apartment. In this guide, we’ll show you what to expect at the wildlife park, give you practical tips for planning and introduce you to other animal parks in the region that are ideal for an extended family trip.
Rolandseck Wildlife Park: nature, animals and plenty of space to discover
The Rolandseck Forest and Wildlife Park is located above Remagen in the district of Rolandseck – only around twelve kilometers south of Bonn and therefore easily accessible from the entire region. The grounds cover around 35 hectares of forest and meadows, i.e. around 350,000 square meters of natural park with paths, clearings and enclosures. Instead of a classically designed zoo, you can expect a spacious forest playground with animals: In some areas, the game runs relatively free, while other animal species live in spacious enclosures.
In the park, you will encounter native species such as fallow deer, red deer, wild boar and mouflon, as well as Scottish Highland cattle, alpacas, goats, ponies, donkeys and rabbits. Many animals can be fed with special wild food, which you can buy in small bags at the ticket office – usually the highlight of the day for children. There is also a forest playground with climbing facilities and a trampoline, picnic areas and a kiosk with snacks and drinks. The atmosphere is deliberately kept simple and close to nature: no flashy attractions, but plenty of space to walk, marvel and take a deep breath.
Opening hours, admission & important information for your visit
It’s worth taking a look at the seasonal times for your trip to Rolandseck Wildlife Park: The park is usually open from mid-March to mid-November, currently usually from Wednesday to Sunday and on public holidays. The ticket offices open in the morning at around 10 am, admission is usually possible until 5 pm and the park closes at 6 pm. Mondays and Tuesdays are closed, unless a public holiday falls on these days – then there may be special opening hours. You should check the exact times on the official website before your visit.
Admission is calculated to be family-friendly: Adults pay a manageable amount, children aged around 3 to 13 years pay a little less, and there are discounts for groups of around 20 people or more. You can also purchase game food in small bags. Important to know: Dogs are not allowed in the wildlife park so as not to stress the animals, and card payment is not always possible at the moment – so some cash in your wallet is recommended. Parking spaces are located near the entrance; on busy weekends it is worth arriving earlier in the day.
How to get from Oberwinter to the wildlife park – and what you can experience on the way
From our vacation apartment in Oberwinter, you can reach Rolandseck Wildlife Park in a short time. Depending on the traffic situation, it will take you about 10 to 15 minutes by car: Follow the B9 towards Remagen/Bonn, turn off into the hinterland at Rolandseck and follow the signs to the park. The route is well signposted and leads you from the Rhine up into the forest – many guests like precisely this contrast: in the morning still by the water, a little later in the middle of the greenery.
The combination is also possible by public transport: from Oberwinter, you can reach Rolandseck station by regional train, from where you can – depending on your fitness level and desire – continue on foot towards the park or take a cab. A nice weekend plan could look like this: On the first day you explore Remagen, the Rhine promenade or the island of Grafenwerth, on the second day the Rolandseck Wildlife Park excursion is on the agenda. Back at the vacation apartment, a hot shower, a fully equipped kitchen and – depending on the apartment you choose – a cozy sofa or terrace with a view of the Rhine Valley await you.
Animal parks in the region: Waldau, Venusberg Wildlife Park & Co.
In addition to the Rolandseck Wildlife Park, there are other animal parks and wildlife enclosures around Bonn and Remagen that are ideal for an excursion with children. A classic for Bonn families is the Waldau on the Venusberg: a nature adventure park with wildlife enclosures, large playgrounds, nature trails and a nature house. On a circular route of around two kilometers, you can observe wild boar, red deer and fallow deer, stop at adventure stations and take a break at the adventure playground. Admission is free, parking spaces and restaurants are available – but it can get crowded, especially at weekends.
The Venusberg Wildlife Park, which is directly adjacent to the Waldau area, is also popular. Here, the focus is on observing native forest animals and environmental education: in the forest information center you can learn more about the ecology and geology of the Kottenforst, there is a barefoot trail, a farmer’s garden and “ghost trees” that look like something out of a children’s book – old beech trees with gnarled crowns. If you stay in the region for several days, you can plan one day for Rolandseck and another for Venusberg/Waldau and enjoy two very different forest experiences.
Even more animals: ostrich farm, wildlife parks in the Westerwald & combinations
If you love animals or are traveling with a childlike enthusiasm for animals, it’s worth taking a look outside the box. In Remagen itself, for example, there is the Gemarkenhof ostrich farm next to the Rolandseck Wildlife Park, where you can see ostriches up close and learn a lot about their husbandry and products. Further afield, for example in the Westerwald, there are additional wildlife parks such as the Bad Marienberg Wildlife Park, which is home to bison, llamas and raccoons as well as deer and wild boar. These destinations are a little further away, but can easily be planned as a day trip for a longer stay.
The advantage of staying in the Oberwinter vacation apartment: You can spontaneously adapt your animal park plan to the weather and your mood. A sunny and warm day? Off to Rolandseck Wildlife Park with plenty of forest shade and a playground. Next day rather changeable? Then perhaps a shorter visit to the Waldau followed by a stroll through the city of Bonn.
